In addition to the three main energy demand sectors transport, residential and commercial and industry, MESSAGE includes a separate demand for non-energy use of energy carriers, mostly in petrochemical industry. The structure of this sector is very simple with only carbonaceous fuels being able to satisfy demand given that carbon is an essential ingredient for the manufactured products (e.g., polyethylene). An important assumption in MESSAGE is that the carbon content of the energy carriers used as feedstock eventually turns into atmospheric CO2.
