笑 Xiào 'laugh'

The top part is 竹 zhú 'bamboo', but it is no longer clear what the connection between bamboo and laughter is!

哭 kū 'cry'

The two boxes on top are mouthes and 犬 quǎn is 'dog'. Dogs do a lot of wailing.

起来 qǐlai 'start to'

听到这个坏消息,他哭起来。 Tīngdào zhè ge huài xiāoxi, tā kūqǐlai. 'Hearing this bad news, he started to cry.'

听到这个好消息,她笑起来。 Tīngdào zhè ge hǎo xiāoxi, tā xiàoqǐlai.'Hearing this good news, she started to laugh.'

Note that one does not need 了 le in either case.

The sentences also work with 了 le in stead of 起来 qǐlai and without the idea of starting:

听到这个坏消息,他哭了。 Tīngdào zhè ge huài xiāoxi, tā kū le. 'Hearing this bad news, he cried.'

听到这个好消息,她笑了。 Tīngdào zhè ge hǎo xiāoxi, tā xiào le. 'Hearing this good news, she laughed.'
