吴先生:你们如果有露天的活动,是在这个广场上举行吗? Wú xiānsheng: Nǐmen rúguǒ yǒu lùtiān de huódòng, shì zài zhège guǎngchǎng shang jǔxíng ma?
史密斯先生:没错。很多学生活动,如果是露天的话,就在这个广场上举行,如果是室内的话,就在主楼里举行。我们进去看看吧。 Shǐmìsī xiānsheng: Méicuò. Hěn duō xuésheng huódòng, rúguǒ shì lùtiān de huà, jiù zài zhège guǎngchǎng shang jǔxíng, rúguǒ shì shìnèi de huà, jiù zài zhǔlóu lǐ jǔxíng. Wǒmen jìnqù kànkan ba.

史密斯先生:因为处理的时候,头部遭到损坏,不太美观,所以决定用蜡像代替。关于他还有很多有趣的故事,我以后慢慢跟你们说。 Shǐmìsī xiānsheng: Yīnwèi chǔlǐ de shíhou, tóubù zāodào sǔnhuài, bú tài měiguān, suǒyǐ juédìng yòng làxiàng dàitì. Guānyú tā hái yǒu hěn duō yǒuqù de gùshi, wǒ yǐhòu mànmān gēn nǐmen shuō.

A tour of UCL

Mr Smith: Mr Song, Mr Wu. I'm so glad that you could come to the UK.
Mr Song: We were both looking forward to this visit.
Mr Wu: Yes, and UCL is our first stop.
Mr Smith: It’s my honour. Let me give you a tour of UCL.
Mr Song: I can’t wait.
Mr Smith: Look, this is our Main Building.
Mr Song: It looks like the National Gallery.
Mr Smith: Indeed. They were designed by the same designer.
Mr Wu: If you have open-air events, are they held in this quad?
Mr Smith: That’s right. Many student events, if they are open-air, are held in this quad; if they are outdoor, they’ll be held in the Main Building. Let’s go in and have a look.
Mr Song, Mr Wu: All right.
Mr Smith: This is the UCL Art Museum. I’m really sorry that it’s not open today. Otherwise I could take you to have a look at it.
Mr Song: That’s all right. We can visit it next time.
Mr Smith: This is our Main Library.
Mr Wu: It’s beautiful and has a really academic atmosphere. If I were a student, I would hang out in this library every day.
Mr Smith: When I was a student of UCL, I studied here quite often. Oh, right! This is the spiritual father of UCL, Jeremy Bentham.
Mr Song: Was he the founder of your university?
Mr Smith: No, but he gave a lot of contributions to our university, and had a deep impact on it.
Mr Wu: Is this a wax work?
Mr Wu: Not all of it. The head is a wax work, but the body isn’t.
Mr Song: It’s incredible. Does it have any stories?
Mr Smith: When he died, he mentioned in his will that he hoped he could attend UCL’s high-level meetings in the future. Therefore, his body was treated after his death. It is placed here on exhibition at ordinary times but we let him attend important meetings.
Mr Wu: Interesting! But why is only the head a waxwork?
Mr Smith: Since the head was damaged during the treatment, it does not look very beautiful. Therefore, we decided to use a waxwork instead of the real one. There are lots of interesting stories about him. I’ll tell you later on.
Mr Song: We are all ears.
Mr Smith: Let’s go on and visit some other places.
Mr Wu: All right. Let’s go.
Mr Smith: This is Foster Court. It’s the building for the Department of Information Studies. My office is here. We can have a chat in my office later on.
Mr Song: No problem!
Mr Smith: The building in front of us is the Science Library. It’s quite new.
Mr Wu: Its style is totally different from the Main Library.
Mr Smith: That’s right. This library is more modern than the Main Library. The building ahead of us is the Roberts Building. It is mainly used by engineering students.
Mr Song: That’s why it has that name.
Mr Smith: Yes. We’ve seen such a lot today. I’ll take you to visit other buildings next time.
Mr Wu: No problem.
Mr Smith: Let’s go to my office then.
Mr Song: All right. Let’s go.
