There is a need for very basic conversations for beginners.

Some of the conversations have suggested story lines. The key thing is to put people in everyday situations and write the conversations to cover common occurrences. What language would they need to function in this situation in natural Mandarin?

The wiki has a good collection of natural conversations thanks to the eLearning Development Grant awarded it in 2012.
