Vocab and notes

啦 la = 了 le + 啊 a
准时 zhǔnshí ‘punctual’
顺利 shùnlì ‘smooth’
展示 zhǎnshì ‘presentation’
我自己的电脑 wǒ zìjǐ de diànnǎo ‘my own computer’
应该没有问题吧。 Yīnggāi méi yǒu wèntí ba. ‘There should be no problem.’ 吧 Ba here indicates that the speaker is not sure.
我需要试一下。 Wǒ xūyào shì yíxià. ‘I need to have a try.’
开机 kāijī ‘start up (a computer)’
幻灯片 Huàndēngpiàn ‘PowerPoint’
做好 zuòhǎo ‘complete’. 好 Hǎo is a resultative complement.
一会儿 yìhuǐr ‘(in) a while, later’
你把这个接到你的电脑上试试。 Nǐ bǎ zhège jiēdào nǐ de diànnǎo shàng shìshi. ‘Try to connect this to your laptop and have a look.’ Note how the object of 接到 jiēdào ‘connect’ comes before the verb with 吧 bǎ.
好像不行啊,显示不出来。 Hǎoxiàng bù xíng a, xiǎnshì bù chūlái. ‘It doesn’t seem to be working; the display is not coming on.’
清楚 qīngchu ‘clear’
不清楚啊,我对这个设备不是很了解。 Wǒ duì zhège shèbèi bú shi hěn liǎojiě. ‘I don’t understand much about this equipment.’ Note how emphatic 是 shì may be used with verbs as well as adjectives.
U盘 or 优盘 yōupán ‘USB stick’
带 dài ‘bring (something)’
要不然 yàoburán ‘otherwise; how about’
拷 kǎo (short for 拷贝 kǎobèi from English 'copy') is used colloquially for the more formal 复制 fùzhì ‘copy’
直接 zhíjiē ‘directly’
放 fàng ‘open (a memory stick)’
拷进去 kǎojìnqù ‘copy in/over’
想得真周到。 Xiǎng de zhēn zhōudào. ‘You thought in a really considerate way.’ -> ‘You thought of everything.’
麦克风 màikèfēng ‘microphone’
按 àn ‘push (a button)’
打开 dǎkāi ‘open, turn on’
嗯 èn ‘mm, all right, yes’
到齐 dàoqí ‘be present’
感谢 gǎnxiè ‘to thank’

这位是来自UCL的史密斯先生。 Zhè wèi shì láizì UCL de Shǐmìsī xiānsheng. ‘This is Mr Smith who has come from UCL.’ Note how 位 wèi is used as a measure word for people instead of 个 ge in formal situations. 来自 Láizì 'come from’ (formal)
今天就由他来给我们介绍一下UCL。 Jīntiān jiù yóu tā lái gěi wǒmen jièshào yíxià UCL. ‘Today I’ve asked him to come and talk about UCL for us.’ 由 Yóu = formal for 让 ràng ‘cause, let, ask’, 介绍 jièshào ‘introduce, explain’

Mr Song: Mr Smith, there you are!
Mr Smith: Aren’t I late?
Mr Song: No. You are punctual! How’s everything going today?
Mr Smith: Fine. Can I use my own laptop for today’s presentation?
Mr Song: That should be all right. Let me have a try.
Mr Smith: All right. Let me start up my laptop first.
Mr Song: OK. Did you finish your PowerPoint?
Mr Smith: Yes, I did. I can show you later.
Mr Song: No problem. Try to connect this to your laptop and have a look.
Mr Smith: All right. Let me have a try.
Mr Song: It doesn’t work. I can't get it to display on the screen.
Mr Smith: Is that my problem?
Mr Song: I’m not sure. I am not quite familiar with this equipment. Do you have a USB stick?
Mr Smith: Yes, I have.
Mr Song: How about trying to copy the PowerPoint to the USB stick. I’ll play with it on our computer.
Mr Smith: No problem. I’ve already done it. Here it is. Have a try.
Mr Song: You thought of everything. This works. Have a look.
Mr Smith: That’s good. Do I have a microphone?
Mr Song: Yes. Here it is. Have a try.
Mr Smith: How does this microphone work?
Mr Song: Press here and turn it on.
Mr Smith: OK.
Mr Song: Let’s start when everyone is here.
Mr Smith: No problem. Can you look at my PowerPoint for me now?
