‘Can’ as in ‘has the capacity or ability to’ with 能 néng or 可以 kěyǐ

他很 能 吃。一顿饭 能 / 可以 吃三碗米饭。 Tā hěn néng chī. Yí dùn fàn néng / kěyǐ chī sān wǎn mǐfàn.
‘He can eat a lot. In one meal he can eat three bowls of rice.’

Note that 会 huì cannot be used in this sentence.


我 会 开车,可是今天我头疼,暂时 不能 / 可以 开车了。 Wǒ huì kāichē, kěshì jīntiān wǒ tóuténg, zànshí bù néng / kěyǐ kāi chē le.
‘I can drive a car, but today I have a headache, and I can’t drive at the moment.’

Note that 会 huì cannot be used in the third part of this sentence. In the first part, it means 'can' in the sense of 'know how to'.
