Love and marriage

Plato asked his teacher Socrates: “What is love?”

Socrates said: “Go to find the best ear of wheat in a wheat field."

Plato ran through a wheat field for a whole day (lit. from morning till evening) and came back empty-handed. He said: “I always felt that there would be a better ear of wheat ahead.

“Socrates said: “This is love. Love is a kind of ideal, more likely to be missed.”

Plato asked: “what is marriage?”

Socrates said: “Go to the woods and find a most suitable tree for the Christmas tree, remember you can only choose one."

After midnight, Plato has come back with a tree.

Socrates asked: “Are you sure this is the most suitable tree for the Christmas tree?”

Plato replied: “It will do. Time was running out, and I was also physically exhausted, therefore I chose this comparatively fine one."

Socrates said: “This is marriage. Marriage is rational, the result of the combination of judgment and compromise.”
