也 Yě has a common meaning of 'also', in the sense of 'both ... and'. ('Also' in the sense of 'in addition to' is often 还 hái.)

It also has a meaning indicating surprise:

  • 你也太嚣张了。 Nǐ yě tài xiāozhāngle. 'You are too arrogant!'
Zhè yě tài shénqíle. 'This is miraculous!'
Tā yě tài méi lǐmàole. 'He is so impolite!
Tā yě zhēn mìngkǔ. ‘He has such a hard life!’
Nǐ yě lǎo dà bù xiǎole, zěnme hái luànshōu huà. 'You're not young any more, how come you still speak such nonsense?' Note that 老 lǎo here means 'quite' (and so 老大不小 lǎo dà bù xiǎo is literally "quite old and not young").
