通 Tōng adds the idea of 'getting through'

接通 Jiētōng 'connect, get through, be connected'

Qǐng bāng wǒ jiētōng Kè xiānsheng.
‘Could you transfer the call to Mr Ke, please?’

Guǎndào jiētōng yǐhòu zhèlǐ jiù yǒu shuǐ le.
‘After the pipeline is connected, there will be (a) water (supply) here.’

Tā de diànhuà yìzhí měi yǒu jiētōng.
‘His phone still doesn’t connect.’

Qiáng nèi de diànxiàn zhōngyú jiētōng le.
‘Finally, the wire in the wall is connected.’

This may form a potential compliment with 了 liǎo:

电话接通不了。 Diànhuà jiētōngbuliǎo.
‘The call cannot be connected.’

打通 Da3tong1 'get (knocked) through, connect'

Dìdào zhōngyú dǎtōng le.
‘The tunnel finally got through.’

Diànhuà dǎtōngle méi?
‘Has the call got through?’

Zhè jiàn shìqing zhǐ yǒu dǎtōng guānxi cái néng chéng.
'This issue can only be solved if you make connections.’

Suīrán diànhuà dǎtōngle, dànshì méi yǒu rén shuōhuà.
‘Although the call has been put through, there’s no-one answering.’

‘The subsea tunnel under the English Channel has got through.’

走通 Zǒutōng 'get through'

Zhè tiáo lù kěyǐ zǒutōng.
‘This road is passable.’

Wǒ yǐwéi cóng zhèlǐ kěyǐ zǒutōng.
‘I though I could appooach through here.’

Nà tiáo jiē fēngle, zhǐ yǒu zhè biān kěyǐ zǒutōng.
‘That street is blocked, only this way is open.’

Dǔchē de tài lìhai, wǒ zài zhǎo kěyǐ zōutōng de lù.
‘I’m looking for a way I can get through, as the traffic jam is too severe.’

Zǒutōng zǒubutōng yào zǒujìnqu cái zhīdào.
‘You can only know whether you can get through or not after you have passed through.’
