Lecturecast August 2018

The information contained in this training guide is designed to give Lecturecast Instructors (Moodle Tutors and Course Administrators)
a brief overview of the Lecturecast Active Learning Platform (ALP) at UCL.

It includes:

1. An introduction to the Lecturecast service at UCL
2. Navigating to Lecturecast ALP via Moodle
3. Working with Courses and Classes
4. Working with the Library
5. Working with your Dashboard

1. An introduction to the Lecturecast service at UCL

The Lecturecast service consists of the Lecturecast Scheduler and the Lecturecast Active Learning Platform (ALP).

The focus of this training guide is Lecturecast ALP which is the tool used to view, edit and manage classroom content
including video recordings.

There are two user roles within the Lecturecast system:

  • Instructors have access to view, edit and manage content for their Moodle courses. Instructors can create and upload content,
    and work with classroom tools to enhance the student learning experience.
  • Students have access to view content for their Moodle courses. Students can add their own notes, flags and bookmarks
    to content and participate in classroom activities.

Moodle Tutors and Course Administrators have Lecturecast Instructor access. Non-Editing Tutors in Moodle and students have
Lecturecast Student access.

The term 'capture' is used throughout the Lecturecast system to describe a video recording.

Video recordings need to be scheduled via the Lecturecast Scheduler to ensure they are captured during the lecture. 

Access the Lecturecast Scheduler to schedule Lecturecast recordings.

2. Navigating to Lecturecast ALP

In this training guide we will demonstrate accessing Lecturecast ALP via a Moodle course.

Refer to the Logging in to ALP training guide to access Lecturecast ALP directly.

2.1 Access Lecturecast via a Moodle course

In this example, 'Moodle Demo Course' will be used.

Click on the course hyperlink to view course content.

2.2 Open the Lecturecast section for this Moodle course

Click the activity hyperlink to open the relevant Lecturecast section.

Some Moodle courses may contain links to multiple Lecturecast sections. Select the link to the section you wish to access.

2.3 Lecturecast opens at the relevant section

When you access the Lecturecast system via Moodle, the Lecturecast section linked to the Moodle course is displayed.

The Lecturecast system may open within Moodle or in a new window depending on the settings selected. In this example,
it has opened within Moodle.  Refer to the Linking Moodle to Lecturecast Change Lecturecast Display Settings training guide
to set the way the Lecturecast window opens.

3. Working with Courses and Classes

3.1 Navigate between courses

Click the 'Courses' option in the taskbar to navigate between your courses within Lecturecast.

3.2 Course content is accessed via classes

Course content is contained in classes. This course currently has four classes.

Each class can contain up to one video and one presentation.

3.3 A class is created when a Lecturecast recording is scheduled

A new 'empty' class is created automatically when a Lecturecast recording is scheduled via the Lecturecast Scheduler.

Classes created by the Lecturecast Scheduler will not contain a video recording until the recording has been captured.

3.4 A class can also be created for extra course content

Use the 'NEW CLASS' button to create additional classes to contain any extra course content you wish to make available
to students.

3.5 Organise classes using groups

Use the 'NEW GROUP' button to group classes containing associated content. For example, if you have an additional video
you want to make available to your students, you can create a new class to contain the additional content and group the
classes relevant to the specific lecture.

3.6 View, edit and manage content

View, edit and manage content within a class using the buttons associated with the class.

4. Working with the Library

4.1 Navigate to the Library

Click the 'Library' option in the taskbar to navigate to the Library.

The LIBRARY page is the repository for all of your content, whether or not it is currently published to a class or is available
to students.

4.2 View library content in a grid or list view

The Library content is currently displayed in the grid view. Click the 'list view' icon to display your content in a list.

Click the 'grid view' icon to return the display to the grid view.

4.3 Upload content to your library

Click the 'UPLOAD CONTENT' button to add content to your library.

4.4 Manage your content

View content you have uploaded, imported or created via the 'My Content' screen.

View content that other users have shared with you via the 'Shared with me' screen.

Click on the drop down arrow for a content item to view, share, edit and delete that content item.

4.5 Select the 'Share' option to publish your content to a course

Select the relevant publishing and availability options for the content item, then scroll to the bottom of the popup box
to publish the content item.

5. Working with your Dashboard

5.1 Navigate to your Dashboard

Click the 'Dashboard' option in the taskbar to navigate to your dashboard.

5.2 The status of your Lecturecast sections is displayed

The dashboard contains a snapshot of the status of each of the your Lecturecast sections.

Use the Term list, located in the upper right corner, to change which sections are being displayed on your dashboard page.

Click 'ALL CLASSES' to open the class list page for the section.
