InstLogin

UCL login to resources

  • However, if you take another route to reach an electronic resource for which UCL has a subscription, you can look to see if it has an "institutional login" option. Resources such as JSTOR, Science Direct and Web of Science all have this type of login option.

You should look for a link labelled something like:

  • Institutional Login
  • UK Federation Login
  • Shibboleth Login

Different resources use different labels, but in each case you will then be asked which institution you belong to, and you can select UCL from a list. This will then take you to the UCL login screen.

If UCL is not listed in the institutions for login this usually means we do not have a subscription to that resource. However, occasionally a publisher may launch this type of login without letting us know. You should try to access the same resource through our website and, if you find that we do have a subscription, let us know and we will register for institutional login too.

What do these labels mean?
  • Institutional Login means that you can use your userid/password from your home institution (UCL) to access the resource (the login you use to access email and other central UCL services).
  • UK Federation is the group of institutions, including UCL, which uses this login mechanism.
  • Shibboleth is the technology behind the new login mechanism (see http://www.ukfederation.org.uk/content/Documents/HowItWorks)
