Adjectives ending in かった do not sound polite, so you need to add です desu to make them polite at the end of clauses and sentences. For example, 小さかったです chiisakatta desu 'it was small' (lit. “is was-small”). It is actually best to think of です desu as adding politeness here, rather than あmeaning “is”.

If you thought 高かったtakakatta 高かった takakatta 'was high' was difficult to pronounce, try 暖かかった atatakakatta 'was warm' from 暖かい atatakai 'warm'.
