Leader

Position 6 (Type of Record) of LDR field should be set to j for musical CDs; otherwise the LDR is the same as for books in RDA.

Physical Description Fixed Field (MARC 007)

Coding for musical CDs will most often have the following pattern:

Position 00 (Category of material): s

Position 01 (Specific material designation): d (sound disc)

Position 02 (Undefined): # (undefined)

Position 03 (Speed): f (speed: 1.4 m. per second (discs))

Position 04 (Configuration of playback channels): s (stereophonic)

Position 05 (Groove width/groove pitch): n (non-applicable)

Position 06 (Dimensions): g (4 3/4 in. or 12 cm. diameter)

Position 07 (Tape width): n (not applicable)

Position 08 (Tape configuration): n (not applicable)

Position 09 (Kind of disc, cylinder, or tape): m (mass-produced)

Position 10 (Kind of material): m (material: plastic with metal)

Position 11 (Kind of cutting): n (not applicable)

Position 12 (Special playback characteristics): e (digital recording)

Position 13 (Capture and storage technique): d (digital storage)

Fixed-Length Data Elements (MARC 008)

The 008 for CDs can appear quite complicated, but requires less work than it seems as many of the elements are designed for the rigorous entering of classical music forms, especially in the form of printed scores. Many of the elements are therefore irrelavent for audio CDs.

Positions 06-17 (Type of date to Place of publication code) are the same as for books.

Positions 18-19 (Form of composition): choose one of the two letter codes at http://www.loc.gov/marc/bibliographic/bd008m.html .These are mostly classical forms, although codes exist for Popular music (pp), Rock music (rc), Blues (bl), and Jazz (jz), if not much else. In addition, the following might be frequently useful:

  • mu - Multiple forms
  • nn - Not applicable
  • uu - Unknown
  • zz - Other
  • || - No attempt to code

Position 20 (Format of music). As this is only applicable for printed scores, always use:

  • n - Not applicable

Position 21 (Music parts). As this is only applicable for printed scores, always use:

  • n - Not applicable

Position 22 (Target audience). Not used, so leave blank.

Position 23 (Form of item). As for books, leave blank.

Positions 24-29 (Accompanying matter). Frequently useful codes:

  • d - Libretto or text
  • e - Biography of composer or author
  • f - Biography of performer or history of ensemble
  • h - Technical information on music
  • i - Historical information

Positions 30-31 (Literary text for sound recordings). For musical CDs, leave this blank.

Position 32 (Undefined). Ignore.

Position 33 (Transposition and arrangement). Only applicable for printed scores, so ignore.

Position 34 (Undefined). Ignore.

Positions 35-39 (Language to Cataloguing source). As for books. Position 35-37 (Language): the predominant language of the sung or spoken text associated with the sound recording.

  • zxx – not applicable
  • und - undetermined

Preferred Source of Information (2.2.2.4)

Use as the preferred source of information a label bearing a title that is permanently printed on or affixed to the resource, excluding accompanying textual material or a container (e.g., a label on an audio CD).

If the resource does not contain a label, use as the preferred source of information another source forming part of the resource itself, giving preference to sources in which the information is formally presented.

Identifier for the manifestation (2.15/MARC 024)

Do not record EAN and UPC barcodes.

Publisher number (2.15.2/MARC 028)

Record issue number (028 02): number used to identify the issue designation, or serial identification, assigned by a publisher to a specific sound recording, side of a sound recording, or performance on a sound recording or to a group of sound recordings issued as a set.

Examples:

028 02 |a ECM2316 |b ECM

028 02 |a 372 9527 |b ECM |q disc 1

When a publisher's number appears in variant forms on an audio recording, its container, accompanying material, etc., record at least the form on the recording itself (e.g., the labels of a disc). If deemed useful for identification or access, record other forms as well. Follow each by a qualifier indicating its location, if appropriate.

Examples:

028 02 |a VDE-CD-552 |b VDE-Gallo

028 02 |a VDE- 552 |b VDE-Gallo |q container

Place and date of capture (7.11.2-3/MARC 033)

Record date and place of the recording following the MARC format. Do not add |d for a particular place of event, but specify it, if available, in an unformatted note (518).

First Indicator
Type of date in subfield $a
# - No date information
0 - Single date
1 - Multiple single dates
2 - Range of dates

Second indicator: 0 (capture)

|a - Formatted date/time (R)

[yyyymmddhhmm+-hmm; a hyphen (-) is used for unknown digits in the year/month/day segment (e.g. 1998----); +hhmm give the Time Differential Factor information (ahead or behind Greenwich Mean Time); any unused position contains a zero.

Example:

033 01 |a 195410171930-0700

|b - Geographic classification area code (R)

Four to six character numeric code for the main geographic area associated with an item. The code consists of the appropriate classification number from the range G3190-G9980 derived from the Library of Congress Classification--Class G by dropping the letter G. [Use Classification Web to identify a code]

|c - Geographic classification subarea code (R)

Alphanumeric Cutter number for a geographic subarea, derived from the Library of Congress Classification-Class G or expanded Cutter number lists for place names.

Example:

033 00 |a 19640920 |b 4364 |c L8

518 |a Recorded in concert at the Shrine Civic Auditorium, Los Angeles, California, 20 September 1964.

Language code (7.12.1.3/MARC 041)

Use one of the following subfields if applicable.

|d - Language code of sung or spoken text (R)

|g - Language code of accompanying material other than librettos (R)

|e – text/libretto (R)

Creator (19.2.1.1/MARC 100,110)

Composer NOT performer will always be used as a creator of a work unless the responsibility of performers goes beyond mere performance, execution, or interpretation (generally in jazz and popular music).

Appendix I.2.1 (relationship designator): “composer – a  person, family, or corporate body responsible for creating a musical work. Use also for persons, etc., adapting another musical work to form a distinct alteration (e.g., free transcription), paraphrasing a work or creating a work in the general style of another composer, or creating a work that is based on the music of another composer (e.g., variations on a theme).”

Example:

100 1_ |a Alvin, Dave, $e composer, $e performer.

Corporate body is considered as a creator when it is responsible for originating, issuing, or causing to be issued, works that result from the collective activity of a performing group as a whole with the responsibility of the group going beyond that of mere performance, execution, etc.

Statement of responsibility (2.4/MARC 245 |c)

Transcribe statements of responsibility for those with a major role in creating the intellectual content of the item, e.g. lyricists, writers, composers.

If a performer's role also includes an element of creation, writing, or producing, then include the statement in a statement of responsibility. This will commonly be the case for popular, rock, and jazz music.

When performers are named more prominently on a resource than composers, songwriters, etc., record statements identifying these performers as statements of responsibility.

Examples:

245 00 |a Arias I love / |c Maria Callas.

245 10 |a Britten, Haydn / |c Rostropovich ; Britten.

[Rostropovich" and "Britten" are in large print on the disc label. "Britten" and "Haydn" are in smaller print below the conductor's names. "Britten, Haydn" has been chosen as the title proper.]

If a performer's role does not includes an element of creation, etc., then put the statement in a note (MARC 511).

If a group is named in the chief source together with the names of the group's members, transcribe only the name of the group in the 245. If considered important, record the names of the group’s members in a note (2.4.1.5.).

Record noun(s) or noun phrase(s) occurring with a statement of responsibility as its part, regardless of whether the noun(s) or noun phrase(s) is/are indicative of the nature of the work, and regardless of whether the noun(s) or noun phrase(s) appear(s) immediately adjacent to the prepositional phrase(s) following it.

Exmaple:

245 14 |a Der Freischütz / |c Oper in 3 Akten von C.M. von Weber.

Publication, Production, Etc., statements (2.7-2.11/MARC 264).

Production statement (2.7):

If deemed useful for identification or access, transcribe place, name and date of production in 264 (2nd indicator 0).

264_0 |a [Boston, Massachusetts] : |b Boston Conservatory, |c March 4, 2011.

[An evening of opera scenes, recorded in Studio 401, March 4, 2011, by the Boston Conservatory]

Publication statement (2.8):

Treat a trade name or brand name used by a publishing company (i.e., a “label”) as a publisher’s name.

If date of publication not identified in the resource, supply a date of publication that corresponds to the copyright date (©), or a copyright renewal or transfer notice, in square brackets, if it seems reasonable to assume that date is a likely publication date. Phonogram copyright date (℗) may also be used to infer a publication date. Always give copyright date (©,℗), even if it is the same as the stated or inferred publication date.

Copyright statement (2.11):

Record the latest phonogram copyright date in a separate 264 (2nd indicator 4) |c. If multiple phonogram copyright dates are present, record the latest date that can be determined to apply to the resource as a whole. Otherwise, do not record a phonogram copyright date. Optionally, record multiple phonogram copyright dates in a note.

Example:

264 _4 |c ©2008, |c ℗2006

Do not transcribe a copyright renewal date as the copyright date. Do not transcribe a date of copyright transfer as the copyright date.

Additional information about copyright notice:

  • Copyright notice (©) identifies the copyright owner, and shows the year of first publication; used only on “visually perceptible” copies [does not include sound in an audio recording].
    • The sound recording copyright notice (℗) provides notice of copyright in a sound recording (phonogram) embodied in a phonorecord; it is just for the sound itself, and will not apply to any other rendition or version, even if performed by the same artist(s).

Extent, dimensions (3.4-3.5/MARC 300)

Record the number of CDs in terms of audio discs followed by total playing time (if available) in brackets.

The standard dimensions of CDs are 4 3/4 inches.

Record the presence of accompanying material in |e.

Example:

300 __|a 1 audio disc (48 min., 17 sec.)  ; |c 4 3/4 in. + |e 1 booklet

Playing time (MARC 306/505)

Record total duration of the recording in 306. If durations of parts or works can be identified in the resource, record them instead of the total duration in separate subfields |a in the following format “hhmmss”, unless highly onerous (for example, when dealing with a song cycle).

Example:

306 |a 000941 |a 001600 |a 002400

Also include playing time for individual works/movements in 505 note.
