As soon as you are able to login to New Moodle and access a course that was migrated from Legacy Moodle, run through this "quick" list of things to check and change, BEFORE enrolling students on it:

Essential Checks

1. Update module code

  1. Wherever the module code appears on a course, it should be the new AMP module code or a variation of it. (E.g. If you have 2 courses in Moodle for one module, one course for undergrads and the other for post-grads say, then the course for undergrads may have the official AMP code: CODExxxx and the other can have the AMP code with a meaningful suffix e.g.: CODExxxx_PG).

2. Edit course settings

  1. In Edit settings for the course, (Administration block > Course administration > Edit settings)
    1. the official module title should be in the 'Course full nameRequired field'
    2. set the 'Course start date' to the date you want your students to be able to access the course.
    3. the official AMP code (or its variation (i.e. the AMP code + a suffix)) should be in the 'Course short nameRequired field'
    4. ensure that the '
    5. in the Description section the Course summary, if used, should not have more than a brief paragraph. (Note: This information is only seen by Moodle users who use the search function to find courses. Hence, your students and colleagues who are enrolled on the course will probably never see it).
    6. in the Course format section set Format to 'Tabs format' or if your topic headings are long, set it to 'Collapsed topics' and make Hidden sections, 'Hidden sections are completely invisible'
  2. If you change any settings on the Edit settings page, scroll to bottom and click on Save and display.

3. Edit forum and topic titles

  1. If your new course has a News forum AND Announcements, delete the News forum (Turn editing on > Edit (News forum) > Edit settings > Delete)
    1. But, if it only has a News forum rename it Announcements  (Turn editing on > click on the 'Edit title' pencil icon, edit and press Enter/return key to save)
  2. Edit section/topic names to indicate the topic that will be covered in that week/section.  (Turn editing on > scroll to the relevant section/topic > Edit > Edit section > Save changes)
  1. Replace any missing images (download them from the course in Legacy Moodle and upload them into your new course in New Moodle).
  2. Check that all the links on your course work and fix or remove or hide any broken or unnecessary ones.
  3. If you wish to record your lectures/sessions and make them available to students then, create new Lecturecast links and ensure that you map you the link to the relevant module or programme section (see: https://wiki.ucl.ac.uk/x/Uw0uB). Note: Recordings must be scheduled via the Lecturecast scheduler and be in rooms where they can be recorded.

5. Create/update/review assessments

  1. Create new Turnitin assignments as/if required.
  2. Update dates, etc. in Moodle assignments if they are to be re-used. Delete or hide them otherwise.
  3. Preview quizzes and quiz questions to ensure they work as intended and replace any images or links that were not migrated.

6. Updating content

  1. Ensure module handbooks and other time sensitive content are up-to-date.
  2. Check and update or remove or hide all the other Activities and Resources on your course.
  3. Configure any Activities and Resources on your course that were in hidden topics on Legacy Moodle and yet still available to students, to make them accessible to students in New Moodle too even though they can no longer be in hidden topics.
  4. Add and order the blocks that you think will be useful and remove any others.

7. Enrolling users

  1. Manually enrol any missing colleagues as required
  2. Set up Portico or self-enrolment for your students.
  3. Make the course visible: If you see the following message on the top of your Moodle pageThis course is hidden and cannot be accessed by students'. Click here to update settings’ then follow the link to make the course visible. (Course visibility > Show) Note: students won't be able to access the course until they have been enrolled and the Start date has passed.

8. View your course as a student

  1. Switch role to...'Student' and check that your students will be able to see and engage with Resources and Activities as you intend. (Note: the course must be visible to students for this to work and don't forget to Return to my normal role after checking the student experience).
