Dear colleague

UCLeXtend PLATFORM

As you know, UCL is developing and piloting UCLeXtend ( “Platform” ) to make certain courses available to the public, some of them free of charge and some which will be charged for.

As those activities are progressing, we are writing to all staff involved to draw their attention to various aspects of UCL’s policy on copyright and restrictions on use of third party material. We are also asking those staff to sign the enclosed copyright form, to ensure UCL is able to use their materials in connection with the Platform.

As with all teaching materials, you will need to ensure you are entitled to reproduce all of the content in your materials that are uploaded to the Platform.  In particular, it is important that materials you have prepared do not contain any copyright material that belongs to a third party (eg images, figures, detailed extracts etc).

Generally, the only exception to this is if you (in your capacity as an UCL employee), have an appropriate permission or licence to use that material for the purpose of the Platform (including where that use is outside the UK). If you believe you are using any materials under permission/licence, we would ask that you provide full details of those materials and copies of the relevant written permission or licence to us.

UCL Library Services has provided some useful guidance on this area generally, which we would ask you to review (see http://www.ucl.ac.uk/library/copyright ). If you have any further questions in relation to the guidance, please contact Library Services.

We also wanted to confirm that you will retain ownership of copyright in materials you have created for the purpose of the Platform activities.  UCL will be entitled to use and licence those materials for the platform (pursuant to the Staff IP Policy) and you will waive any right to a share of relevant revenue that may arise as a result of UCL using the Platform for commercial purposes. UCL will however own copyright in relation to any recordings made for the purposes of the Platform.

Please could you sign and return the enclosed consent form as soon as possible. If you have any questions in relation to this letter or the form, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Fiona Strawbridge
